THE DRIVING THEORY TEST IS SPLIT UP INTO TWO SECTIONS
Before you attempt your driving test you must have successfully taken and passed the theory test which involves a multiple choice theory test and a visual hazard perception test which tests your observation skills.
The Theory Test
This is a multiple-choice test based on questions which are covered in these three books which we recommend you buy (click to buy online):
Study these books to learn the rules and skills you will be tested on in the multiple choice exam.

The Hazard Perception TEST
During the hazard perception assessment, you'll watch 14 video clips featuring everyday driving scenarios. At least one developing hazard will occur in each clip, with one clip containing two hazards. Your goal is to click the mouse button as soon as you detect an emerging hazard. The sooner you spot it, the higher your score for that hazard, up to a maximum of 5 points. The trick here is not to predict what will happen but to click when you see something that may (potentially) become an actual hazard.
Mastering the Hazard Perception Test
At RDS, we know the hazard perception test can be one of the more challenging parts of the theory exam. That's why we dedicate significant time to developing this crucial skill during your practical lessons.
What is a Developing Hazard?
A developing hazard is any situation on the road that would cause you, as the driver, to take evasive action like changing speed or direction. For example:
- A parked car with its indicator on, signaling it may pull out into traffic
- A pedestrian stepping into the road unexpectedly
- A vehicle ahead braking suddenly
Being able to quickly identify and respond to these potential dangers is vital for safe driving.
The Hazard Perception Assessment
During the test, you'll watch 14 video clips featuring everyday driving scenarios. At least one developing hazard will occur in each clip, with one clip containing two hazards.
Your goal is to click the mouse button as soon as you detect a hazard emerging. The sooner you spot it, the higher your score for that hazard, up to a maximum of 5 points.
While you won't be penalized for incorrect clicks, repeatedly clicking randomly will score you zero points. You get one attempt per clip with no option to review or change your responses.
Developing Hazard Awareness
Identifying developing hazards requires keeping your eyes constantly scanning the road environment for potential risks. Our instructors will have you practicing this technique during every lesson, ensuring it becomes an ingrained habit.
We'll also expose you to a wide variety of road types, traffic conditions, and weather situations. This comprehensive training allows you to build the observational skills and hazard perception abilities the examiners are looking for.
With focused guidance from our experienced instructors, you'll approach the hazard perception test feeling confident and prepared. And more importantly, you'll have developed a defensive driving mindset that will keep you safe on the roads for life.
