Manual or Automatic Driving Lessons?

The key differences between learning to drive in a manual and an automatic car primarily revolve around the gear-changing mechanism and the level of driver engagement required when learning to drive.

LEARNING IN A MANUAL CAR
1. Manual Gear System: Manual cars have a gearstick and a clutch pedal. The driver must manually change gears by pressing the clutch and moving the gearstick. This controls the level speed and acceleration of the car.
2. No. of Pedals: There are three pedals in a manual car, the clutch (left), brake (middle), and accelerator (right).
3. Driver Control: Manual cars offer greater control over the vehicle, allowing the driver to choose the appropriate gear for different driving conditions, such as uphill driving or for smoother or faster acceleration.
4. Driver Engagement: Driving a manual car requires more physical and mental engagement, as the driver must coordinate the clutch and gearstick.
5. Driving Costs and Vehicle Maintenance: Manual cars are generally less expensive to buy and maintain due to their simpler mechanical design.

LEARNING IN AN AUTOMATIC CAR
1. Automatic Gear System: Automatic cars have a simplified gearstick with modes such as Park (P), Reverse (R), Neutral (N), and Drive (D). The car automatically changes gears based on speed, acceleration requirements and road conditions.
2. No. of Pedals: Automatic cars have only two pedals: the brake (left) and the accelerator (right).
3. Ease of Driving: Automatic cars are easier to drive, especially in urban environments with heavy traffic, as there is no need to manually change gears or operate a clutch every time you have to stop and start.
4. Driver Comfort: Automatic transmissions provide a smoother ride with seamless gear transitions, reducing the physical effort required from the learner driver.
5. Driving Cost and Vehicle Maintenance: Automatic cars tend to be more expensive to purchase and repair, although modern automatic transmissions are designed to be more reliable and fuel-efficient than many of the older models.

AUTOMATIC OR MANUAL LEARNER SUMMARY

• Manual Cars: More control, higher engagement, less expensive, but can be tiring in heavy traffic to drive.
• Automatic Cars: Easier to drive, simpler, but generally more expensive and less engaging for some drivers.

The choice between learning to drive in a manual or an automatic car depends on personal preference and budget considerations. It is also worth noting that the majority of new electric cars (EVs) are automatic.

Please note: Passing your driving test in an automatic car does not allow you to drive a manual car in the future.

How MANY DRIVING LESSONS do I need?

Normally, it takes most new drivers about 45 hours of driving lessons with a fully qualified driving instructor and an additional 20 plus hours of driving practice with either friends or family to learn to drive and pass their driving test. This figure can be reduced if you choose to take automatic driving lessons.
